Open Water Diver

Want to learn to SCUBA dive? The Open Water Diver course is where it all begins!

Open up your world and see what lies beneath the waves. This full PADI certification qualifies you to dive anywhere in the world to depths of 60 feet*.

Qualifications

  • Be at least 10 yrs old*
  • Have moderate comfort in the water
  • Have adequate swimming skills and be in good physical health
    (You will be required to swim 200 yards and tread water for 10 mins)

Course Details

The Open Water course is taught over 5 weeks, which consist of:

  • 5 confined water (pool) dives at McMurtrey Aquatic Center
  • 5 knowledge development (classroom) sessions at Bakersfield SCUBA
    Busy schedule? You can also complete the knowledge developments online with PADI eLearning!
  • 4 open water (ocean) dives at the Avalon Dive Park on Catalina Island

Required SCUBA Equipment

You will need to purchase your own mask, snorkel, boots, gloves, and fins for the course.
The rest of the equipment can be rented through the shop and is included with the course fee. The package includes:

  • Regulator
  • Buoyancy control device (BCD)
  • Submersible pressure gauge (SPG)
  • Tank
  • Weights
  • Wetsuit
  • Hood

Cost

The course fee is $295 and includes all classroom materials (PADI Open Water Crew-Pak, PADI Open Water DVD, PADI log book, RDP table), rental gear, air fills, all 5 pool sessions, and your certification card.

The instructor fee is $100 and is paid directly to your Open Water Instructor.

The trip to Catalina Island is around $450, depending on the season and room size, and is separate from the course fee. This cost includes two nights hotel stay, all transfers to/from the hotel and dive park, equipment rentals (tank and weights), air fills, and all tips/gratuity.

*Students between the ages of 10 and 14 will earn a Jr. Open Water Diver certification. Certified divers under 12 years old may only dive to a maximum depth of 40 feet, and must be accompanied by a PADI Professional or a certified parent or guardian.
